In recognition of International Women’s Day, we would like to share a snapshot on Mary Robinson. Mary Robinson was the first female President of Ireland, a role she held from 1990 to 1997. During her tenure, she was a passionate advocate for human rights, economic justice, and environmental protection. She was also a leader in the struggle for independence and democracy in Ireland and a key figure in the Northern Ireland peace process.
She was particularly dedicated to the rights and empowerment of women and children, and was the first head of state to attend a United Nations Conference on Women. In 1997, she became the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and united the world against oppressive regimes and human rights abuses. After leaving the UN, she founded the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice, which works to ensure the voices of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people are heard in the face of climate change.
Mary was awarded numerous honors for her work, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from U.S. President Barack Obama in 2009. She was a powerful example of a woman who made a difference in the world through her courage and commitment.
