When we explore animals in the primary classroom, we often do so through the theme of pets or the zoo or the farm. Perhaps also, we look at different habitats like the jungle. However, one angle which you might not think about is how animals help humans in different ways, like guide dogs for people with physical disabilities. Here are some ideas for exploring how animals help humans.

1. Have a discussion about different types of animals and how they help humans in different ways. Introduce the concept of service animals and how they are specially trained to help people in need.

2. Introduce students to the work of Civil Defence Ireland and talk about the important work service animals do for them. Explain the training these animals go through and the responsibilities they have.

3. Have students watch videos of service animals in action and talk to them about what they observed. Ask them questions about the animals’ behaviours and the work they do.

4. Have students create a poster or presentation about service animals and the important work they do.

5. Have students role play different scenarios where service animals are providing help and support. Ask them to think about the different ways that service animals can help people in need.
