May 9th marks Europe Day, a celebration of the momentous Schuman Declaration delivered by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in 1950. This declaration laid the foundation for the creation of the European Union and marked the beginning of a new era for Europe.

Every year, Europeans commemorate Europe Day to honour and celebrate the peace, unity, and diversity that the EU represents. It’s a time to reflect on the progress that the EU has made over the years in promoting democracy, human rights, and economic development. Europe Day is a special occasion to honour the European way of life, rooted in principles of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, and the rule of law. It’s also a time to commemorate Europe’s abundant cultural heritage, which has made significant contributions to the world in art, music, literature, and science.

Europe Day is a time to celebrate the unity, diversity, and progress of Europe. It is a day to reflect on the challenges that lie ahead and to renew our commitment to building a more peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive Europe that benefits everyone.

There are plenty of ways to celebrate including discuss European history and landmarks with your class, decorate your classroom with blue and yellow colours representing the EU flag, or why note, try some European foods!
