The visual arts curriculum gives opportunities to explore puppet making but I wonder if you’ve ever thought about doing it. It can combine Fabric and Fibre with Construction in terms of strands. Even if you have very few materials, you can cover the theme by drawing and painting. Here are some simple ideas to help you get going.
- Making Hand Puppets: Have students create hand puppets using material scraps and paper plates. Give them the freedom to be creative and to make their own designs. They can use markers, scissors, and other craft supplies to create their own unique puppets.
- Designing Puppets: Have students create a puppet design by drawing a picture of the puppet they want to create. They can use colored pencils, markers, and other art supplies to make their designs.
- Crafting Puppets: Have students use craft supplies such as felt, fabric, and stuffing to create their own puppets. They can use these materials to make their own puppet designs.
- Puppet Show: Have students write, direct, and perform their own puppet shows. They can use their own puppets or the ones they have created in the previous lessons. This is a good way to integrate with English or Gaeilge.
