Gardening is a fun and enjoyable activity, but it can also teach children valuable life skills, such as responsibility, patience, and the importance of caring for the environment. Below we have a list of tips and activities to introduce gardening to primary school children to inspire and get ‘dug’ in!
- Start with the basics
Introduce students to the different parts of a flower and what they do. Discuss different types of flowers and how we care for them indoors and outdoors.
- Activities
Have the class plant seeds and nourish plants in the classroom or create a garden plot in the school garden. Talk about the benefits of gardening such as decorating outdoor spaces and growing food or why not make flower arrangements
- Field trips
Take students on a field trip to a local botanical garden, nursery or community garden to learn about different types of flowers and plants.
- Art project
Create art projects such as flower paintings or drawing to encourage creativity and inspire an appreciation for nature.
- Storytelling
Share stories about flowers and gardening to engage students and spark their imagination.
- Cooking
Incorporate cooking activities using fresh herbs and vegetables grown in the school garden to teach students about healthy eating and the benefits of growing their own food.
- Bees
Discuss the importance of bees in our gardens and ways to attract them!
